The Artist

Janine BaldwinJanine has exhibited extensively across the UK, including the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and her work is held in numerous collections worldwide. She lives on the North Yorkshire coast, which is a constant source of inspiration, and describes her work as the expression of a lifelong affinity with the landscape. Her interest lies not in making a literal representation of nature but rather in celebrating the physical sensory experience of land and sea. Janine's semi-abstract paintings are vibrant and energetic, combining gestural marks and the use of rich evocative colour.

Associations arise from her colours and lines - a fresh green may remind us of new foliage in springtime, a round shape may recall pebbles smoothed by the waves. She uses a gradual layering of paint to create her work, and oilbars are often used to bridge the gap between drawing and painting. Influences include Abstract Expressionism - particularly Willem de Kooning - and Cornish art.
